Abstract

Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Mlati Sleman Regency are unable to solve algebra material
problems. The research aims to determine students' mathematical problem solving abilities and the causes
of students not being able to carry out Polya's problem solving steps. This type of research is qualitative
descriptive research. The research subjects were students of class VII-A Muhammadiyah Middle School
3 Mlati Sleman Regency who were selected by purposive sampling, the object of this research was the
ability to solve students' mathematical problems based on Polya's theory. Data collection techniques are
carried out by giving tests and interviews. The instruments used were the math problem solving test
questions and interview guidelines. Data analysis is done by means of data reduction, display data and
verification. Data validity is done by triangulation of sources. The results showed that the percentage of
students' mathematical problem solving abilities were 1, understanding the problem 73.68%, linking the
elements known, questioning and formulating in the form of 42.11% mathematical models, choosing
strategies, elaborating and carrying out calculations 5.26%, interpreting the results on the original problem
and double-check the correctness of the 0% solution. 2, The percentage of problem-solving abilities are
at low and very low criteria because students are not able to understand the meaning of the word in the
problem, are not used to checking the adequacy of the questions, do not read and learn, do not know the
formula used, do not know mathematical models, do not ask when they do not understand, do not have a
strategy, miscalculate calculations, never practice non-routine questions, and are not accustomed to
interpreting the results and re-checking the correctness of the solution during classroom learning.
