Abstract
This study reveals a picture of the future in adolescents with autistic
spectrum disorder, and also the factors that influence the future
orientation. Subjects in this study were two mothers who have teenagers
with autism. Significant person in this study were two teacher. The method
used in this research is a qualitative method using case studies. Data
collection in this study used observation and interviews. Data analysis
method used is content analysis. The subjects in this study were selected
by purposive sampling. Sampling was carried out on subjects with the
characteristics: mothers who have children with autism who are 12-21
years old, attend SLB Negeri Temanggung and have different severity
from each other (the first subject who has autism-hyperactive problems
and second subjects diagnosed with autism). The results showed that
subject 1 had a good future orientation in secondary school and job for her
son. Subject have the motivation to enter his son on islamic boarding
schools after graduating from SLB and directing her son to agricultural
work field. Subject make careful planning, she can overcome the problem
by evaluating. Subject 2 has an unclear future orientation of secondary
school and job for his son. Subject 2 has the motivation to directing his
son on two areas of course that also a field of job in the future, which are
painting or shipbuilding miniature. At the planning step, subject make plan
unspecificly and spontaneously without being prepared several years ago,
so there is different perspective for directing future orientation between
subject and teacher because lack of communication. Subject lacks proper
preparation and subject will seeking information if had difficulty in
planning, this make subject tend to be slow in setting plans (evaluation).
The conclusion of this study is, subject 1 show future orientation with
factor that affect self-concept, family support, school support and
religiosity. In subject 2 show future orientation with factor that affect selfconcept, friend support like neighbor or islamic study group support,
economics, and religiosity.
