Abstract

Background: Rosella calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) contain phenol and anthocyanin flavonoids that have activity as antioxidants and can stimulate the immune system. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rosella powder capsule on expression IL-10 using pre and post test method on 21 healthy volunteers who fulfilled inclusion criteria and willing to fill informed consent. Methods: Volunteers were given rosella powder in capsules form with 500 mg dose for 30 days and IL-10 was examined using flowsitometric method on days 0.30 and 45. The results were analyzed using SPSS with wilcoxon test. Results: The value of IL10 expression in the 0.30 and 45 day volunteers were 0.42 ± 0.24; 0.83 ± 0.47 and 1.06 ± 0.67. These results showed that IL-10 expression had an effect on day 0 to 30 (p < 0.05) and IL-10 expression did not affect the 30 day of the 45 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: administration of rosella powder capsules (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) dose 500 mg/day for 30 days increased the expression of IL-10, but within normal limits on healthy volunteers.
