Abstract

Starch is a renewable degradable carbohydrate biopolymer that can be purified from various sources by environmentally sound processes. Starch, by it self, has severe limitation due to its water solubility. Articles made from starch will swell and deform upon exposure to moisture. To improve some of the properties, starch is often blended with hydrophobic biopolymers. Starch generally consist of amylase (hydrophilic biopolymer) and amylopectin (hydrophobic biopolymer). The amylopectin was isolated from amylase by diluting penthanol-1 then both amylase and amylopectin blended together to form biopolymer. The amylopectin was cross-linked with amylase, and biodegradable plastic films produced mechanically were more optimal than before, and they were longer in water resistant time. The biodegradable plastic films produced were prospective biodegradable plastics for eco-friendly packaging.
