Abstract

Leaf of Waru (Hibiscus tiliaceus, L) usually has been used as expectorant but has a bitter taste. The suitable form is chewing tablet with the excipient which can mask the taste. The aim of this research is to get optimum formula of chewing tablet using aerosil and manitol as excipient by implementation of factorial design method.
Waru leaf extract was obtained by maceration method using ethanol 70%. Optimum formula was produced from orientation by implementation of factorial design method i.e P(1) mixture of aerosil low level (5%) and manitol low level (250%); Pa mixture of aerosil high level (10%) and manitol low level (250%); Pb mixture of aerosil low level (5%) and manitol high level (330%); Pab mixture of aerosil high level (10%) and manitol high level (330%). Waru leaf extract was mixed homogenously with the filler of P1, Pa, Pb, Pab individually and then made granules mass with 10% solution gelatin, sieved through no 10 mesh. After that, granules were dried at 50oC. The dried granules were sieved through sieve no 12/30 mesh and then tested for physical characteristic including tapping index, compactibility and taste. Physical characteristic values were calculated to get optimum formula. Tablet getting from optimum formula were tested for physical properties including the uniformity of weight, hardness, friability anda taste. Data of granules and tablet testing analyzed using variant analysis with Yate’s treatment. Active substances in waru leaf extract was tested using thin layer chromatography.
The result showed that aerosol, manito and both were effect the compactibility. Based on calculation of factor effect and interaction showed that aerosol significantly effect for fluidity and manitol for the taste. The proposrtion of aerosol 9,025% - manitol 322,306% as the optimum formula for chewing tablet having the physical characteristic including hardness 5,39kg, the friability 0,242% but the taste of the tablet was still little bitter and substance in waru leaf extract was still on tablet.
