Abstract
Abstract
The proposed research will examine the the kindhsips and intelectual conectivities between the Muslim modernist and traditionalist circles by examining the experiences of Muslim leaders in the 20th and 21st century Indonesia. In particular, this proposal investigates and explores three regions that represent the cultural center of Ismalic modernism and traditionalism: Yogyakarta, Jombahg and Ponorogo. These places have historic background in the development of Islamic organizations, including educational institutions such as madrasah and pesantren. This research asks how Islamic traditionalism and modernism in Indonesia is connected culturally and intelectually through familial linkages in the 20st century Indonesia? How familial and genalogical linakges are contrusted by muslim leaders in Yogyakarta, Jombang dan Ponorogo? How intelectual and familial genealogy can theoretically explain through the role of Islamic education?
