Abstract

This study discusses how Yaa Gyasi's experience as a black immigrant shapes her writing.
In the New Historicism approach to the novel Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi, it can be
concluded that this work is an in-depth description of how historical, social, and cultural
backgrounds influence themes, characters, and narratives. This book explores how historical
experiences, particularly those related to racism and social injustice in American history, have
influenced the identities and journeys of its protagonists. It sheds light on how the characters
respond to societal influences from the past.
Yaa Gyasi narrates history in Transcendent Kingdom through the lens of her characters'
personal experiences, memories, and reflections. She intertwines the past and present, offering
glimpses that shape their lives. Gyasi illustrates how historical events have a ripple effect across
generations, shaping the characters' identities and relationships. Throughout the novel, Gyasi's
characters reflect on their pasts, recalling pivotal moments, traumas, and joys that have shaped
their lives. These personal narratives serve as windows into broader historical realities, such as
the challenges faced by immigrants in America, and the legacy of racism and discrimination.
