Abstract
Textbooks in English Language Teaching (ELT) classrooms hold great significance in ensuring the success of the learning process. This study analysed the content of English in Mind Starter for Starters (2nd Edition) for students in seventh grade. The textbook is a CEFR A1 equivalent normally used for English learners of beginner level. The textbook was chosen because it is specifically written with beginner-level students in mind. However, it is necessary to determine whether the textbook is suitable to be used in the ELT setting for seventh graders.
This study applied a qualitative method. It showed content evaluation and comparison between English in Mind Starter and English for Nusantara using the BSNP assessment rubric. The data were collected through content analysis by identifying the suitability of the book to the curriculum. In addition, several methods, such as observation and note-taking, were applied to collect data.
The results showed that English in Mind Starter provides at least five of the seven criteria needed to fulfilled. Thus, two points were concluded. First, the English textbook is relevant to the Kurikulum Merdeka because it meets at least five of the seven requirements decided by the government. The textbook meets the requirement to include interactional and transactional texts, multimodal texts, fiction and nonfiction, nonverbal language, and basic skills. Secondly, the textbook itself fulfills four out of the six aspects of a good English textbook as governed by the Permendikbud Ristek No. 7 Tahun 2022. What the book lacks is the discussion about Pancasila and Indonesian cultural values. Despite this, English in Mind Starter may still be a preferred supplementary material for junior high school classroom settings.
