Abstract

Antioxidants refer to compounds that have the ability to inhibit, delay and capture free radicals which function to slow down the oxidation process or neutralize free radicals. Microalga Aurantiochytrium sp. has the potential to inhibit free radicals. The aim of this research was to determine the potential antioxidant activity of microalga Aurantiochytrium sp. using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine) method.
The method used in this research is observational. Aurantiochytrium sp. Microalgae Extract. made by the Folch method using a mixture of methanol and chloroform solvents. The antioxidant activity test used the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine) method with Vitamin C as a positive control. The extract was dissolved using ethanol to obtain the concentrations used, namely 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm. The absorbance was read using UV-Visible spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 518 nm. The positive control using vitamin C carried out the same preparation to obtain the concentrations used, namely 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ppm. Next, test the antioxidant activity using the DPPH method using the IC50 test parameter. After that, it can be analyzed with SPSS.
The yield of the resulting extract was 42.95%. Aurantiochytrium sp. microalgae extract. has antioxidant activity with an average IC50 value of 103.005 ± 3.753 ppm which contains carotenoid and terpenoid compounds with a comparison of vitamin C which obtained an IC50 value of 14.879 ± 2.423 ppm. The statistical results showed significance between the positive control and the microalgae Aurantiochytrium sp. (p > 0.05). The results show that each increase in concentration can affect the IC50 value.
Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the microalgae extract Aurantiochytrium sp. with the solvent methanol chloroform has moderate antioxidant activity.
