Abstract
Social media is seen as a source of online content that can play an important part in the teaching and learning process. English learning takes place not only in the classroom, but also outside of classroom, where students learn on their own. This study aimed to know students’ perceptions of using social media in learning English in terms of students experienced in using social media, kind of social media support students, the advantages and disadvantages using social media in learning English.
This study used qualitative descriptive involving six participants majoring eight- grade students in SMP N 1 Bayat. To collect the data, the researcher used in depth semi-structured interview by having voice call via WhatsApp. For the data analysis technique, the researcher transformed the data into written then the researcher analyzed based on Miles and Hubberman’s theory.
The results of descriptive analysis showed that most of the students had positive perceptions of using social media in learning English. Social media was believed to be useful in improving students' English learning. Students stated that social media provides them with free English content sources to practice their English from native speaker. Moreover, social media offers a various of English contents, allowing students to access and choose contents that students need and desire anytime and anywhere. Youtube and Tiktok are the most widely used social media platforms video-based for learning English. However, using video-based platforms may pose challenges including higher data usage and signal issues for students.
