Abstract
The purposes of this research are; (1) To explain the portrayal of the main character in the novel Children of Blood and Bone. (2) To explain the main character’s emotional development and its causes. (3) To explain the moral values presented in the novel.
This research is classified as library research. All the data are gathered by reading books, articles, journals, theses, and electronic or internet sources that are relevant to the topic of this research. The subject of this research is the novel “Children of Blood and Bone” written by Tomi Adeyemi. The object of the research is the main character’s emotional development and its causes. The focus of this research is to analyze the emotional development of the main character in the novel Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. The aims of this research are to analyze the causes that influence the main character’s emotional development, as well as the outcome that come from those influences by using Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development. The data is conducted by using Qualitative method.
The findings indicates that; (1) The main character is portrayed as someone who is brave, kind, protective toward her family, skillful, quick-witted and so on yet also possess some weakness such as being reckless, stubborn aggressive and so on. (2) The main character’s emotions that develop when she has grown up are mostly negative, such as hate, uncontrolled anger, guilt, prejudice, fear, despair, anxiety and so on. There are two causes that makes her develop and posses more negative emotions than the positive emotions; family and environment. (3) There are six moral values presented in the novel that the researcher mentions in this research, some which can be learn and some that work as reminder that those behavior needs to be changed or avoided. They are the important of family, the important of friendship, giving little kindness is better that never, bearing prejudice against other, parenting mistake could lead children astray, and realizing the important of trust.
