Abstract
Perception is an individual's idea based on their experience and view of something. As an individual, students also have a view of English learning that affects them in the process of learning. Hence, this research on students' perceptions of English learning was conducted to obtain information about students' perceptions, obstacles, and expectations in learning.
The research subjects were culinary arts students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Yogyakarta, consisting of 5 female and 5 male students. The research subjects were randomly selected by the English teacher. In this case, the research method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study. The research data was obtained by using a semi-structured interview method in a face-to-face.
After conducting the research process, it found that: 1) The implementation of English learning at SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Yogyakarta has covered the four macro skills of English (speaking, writing, listening, reading). 2) Culinary arts students perceive English learning as necessary, important, fun, and sometimes difficult to understand. 3) The obstacles faced by culinary arts students in learning English are disinterest in learning English, dissatisfaction with the way teachers teach, and students' lack of understanding in learning English. 4) Culinary arts students' expectations of English learning including students who expect a variation of learning, learning outside the classroom, learning English to be adjusted to students' abilities, and preference for learning with more emphasis on speaking skills. Therefore, it can be concluded that culinary arts students of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Yogyakarta have various perceptions, obstacles, and expectations in English learning.
