Abstract
This research is entitled an analysis of violating maxims in cooperative and politeness principles in stand-up comedy show by Trevor Noah. The aims of this research are (1) to identify the types of violating maxim of cooperative principles in stand-up comedy show by Trevor Noah, (2) to identify the types of violating maxim of politeness principles in stand-up comedy show by Trevor Noah, and (3) to find out the aims of the violation of cooperative and politeness principles in stand-up comedy show by Trevor Noah.
This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data in this research are Trevor Noah's utterances in his stand-up comedy shows taken from his YouTube channel. The writer analyzed the data obtained using the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap technique (Uninvolved Conversation Observation Technique) and note-taking technique. To analyze the data, the writer used a descriptive analysis method based on Grice's theory of cooperative principles and Leech's theory of politeness principles.
The result of this research shows that there are 54 utterances containing humor in Trevor's stand-up comedy show which violated cooperative and politeness principles. The most frequent violations of Grice's cooperative principles were in a form of relevance maxim and manner maxim, each of which was violated 9 times. Meanwhile, Leech's politeness principles mostly were violated in a form of approbation maxim and sympathy maxim, each of which was violated 6 times. Apart from that, in this research, the writer found 2 purposes of violating maxim of cooperative and politeness principles in stand-up comedy show by Trevor Noah, namely to be funny and criticize.
