Abstract

Women are one of the marginalized groups in society. As one of the most
disadvantaged groups of people, women are often faced with discrimination due to their
gender. Intersectionality refers to multiple forms of discrimination such as racism, sexism,
and classism that intersect or combine in the experience of marginalized groups like
women. Gender discrimination has an important impact on the career, identity formation,
and development of women. A thorough knowledge of intersectionality and personality
development connected to recognizing the influence of intersecting social identities, such
as gender, race, or socioeconomic status, can significantly impact the development of one’s
identity.
The study employed Kimberle Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory and Erikson’s
stages of development theory. Moreover, to analyze the series, this study used a qualitative
descriptive research method. The information, approach, and theories are drawn from
books, internet sources, online libraries, and journals. This study’s primary source is the
limited series “The Queen’s Gambit” (2020), while the secondary sources include research,
books, scripts, and journals related to this study.
The result of this study is that the limited series The Queen’s Gambit clearly
illustrates that the inequality that Beth Harmon faced as a woman and a chess player is not
only about gender but includes age, race, class, stereotypes, and appearances that intersect
and impacted Beth’s complex identity formation. The study also illustrates the impact of
the intersectionality of gender discrimination on Beth’s stages of development during her
school age, adolescence, and young adulthood stage as both a chess player and a woman.
