Abstract
English is a compulsory subject at every level of education in Indonesia. In learning English, grammar plays an important role in mastering the four basic skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. By learning grammar, students will more easily master these four basic skills because they understand how to organize an idea into a sentence correctly. In the process of learning achievement, learning strategies have a role in students' learning success. Students who understand and use strategies in learning have a better impact on their learning outcomes. This study aimed to find out and to describe the Advanced Grammar learning strategies used by students of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan.
This study used mixed research method with survey design. Quantitative method is used to answer the question of what learning strategies students use in learning Advanced Grammar course and what is the most dominant learning strategy. While the qualitative method is used to describe the learning strategy used and to find out more about the reasons why students use these strategies. The respondents in this study were 30 students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan who had enrolled the Advanced Grammar course in the Academic Year of 2021/2022. The research instrument in this study used an adapted questionnaire from Bayou (2015) and semi-structured interview that have been validated by validator.
The findings of this study indicated that the meta-cognitve strategy was the most frequently used strategy by Advanced Grammar students, while the memory strategy was the least frequently used. As the outcome of this study, it is possible that students in Advanced Grammar classes have a propensity to learn by paying attention well to incorrect grammar and distinguish it from the correct one.
