Abstract

Using grammar is an important aspect of assisting students in their comprehension of the text. The third semester of the English Education Department at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan at the pre-advanced level requires students to comprehend how sentences are constructed into English. However, they still have trouble comprehending distinctive phrases or sentence structures, because grammar deals with sentences, forms, and smaller units such as clauses, phrases, and words. As a result, students frequently struggle to comprehend what they are reading, which makes it challenging to find the meaning of the main idea. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the correlation between student grammar and their reading comprehension in the third-semester of the Department of English Education of Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta academic year 2021/2022.
The method of this study is quantitative research using correlational research. The subjects of this research are students in the third semester of English education at Ahmad Dahlan University. The research instrument was a TOEFL test for grammar mastery and reading comprehension. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation.
The results of the descriptive analysis are as follows: (1) there are 14 students or 35% got scores of 40-59. The mean value is 51.68, based on the classification category in the poor category. This means that there is still a lack of mastery of grammar for third-semester students of the English Education Department, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta academic year 2021/2022; (2) there are 14 students or 35% got scores of 40-59. The mean value is 66.20, based on the classification category in the fair category. This means that there is still a lack of mastery of grammar for third-semester students of the English Education Department, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta academic year 2021/2022. The result of Pearson Product Moment Correlation found that there is a significant relationship between students' grammar mastery and their reading comprehension with the correlation coefficient rcount is higher than rtable (0.739 > 0.312). Therefore, the interval is 0.60-0.80, which means that the correlation is classified as a high correlation. In other words, there is a high correlation between variable X and variable Y. Consequently, students must focus on improving their grammar skills in order to achieve better reading skills by mastering tenses, exploring sentence structures, and learning parts of speech. Also, an educator can assist students by giving them material from simple to complex or by providing fun lessons to enhance students' grammatical skills. In light of the findings of the study, the researcher concludes that students who have a great mastery of grammar will have great reading comprehension.
