Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the whole world including Indonesia, necessitated the implementation of blended learning for the teaching and learning process. Blended learning naturally has an impact on students' learning, including their speaking skills. The objectives of this research are to know students' understanding about blended learning and the impact of blended learning on students' speaking skill.
This study is qualitative research that employs interview methods and questionnaires. The interview questions were adapted from Hussain, Shahzad, and Ali (2019). The interview consisted of open-ended questions with the aim of obtaining relevant information about the impact of blended learning on students' speaking skills. The subjects of this research are 11 student of English education study program students at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, class of 2019/2020 academic year. The questionnaire data are taken from students’ responses to 14 questions, then the data are analyzed and finally described. The questionnaire was adopted from Bertha Musty and Atep Aulia Rahman in 2020.
The results of this research indicate that after nearly two years of participating in blended learning, the English education study program students at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan of 2019/2020 academic year did not experience any improvement in their English-speaking skills. They felt that blended learning was ineffective in enhancing their speaking skills and encountered several obstacles, such as fear of making grammatical errors and a lack of vocabulary.
