Abstract
The emergence of digital technology has significantly transformed learning, teaching, and assessment in education. Traditional paper-based assessments are increasingly being replaced by digital alternatives, with electronic portfolios (eportfolios) becoming powerful tools in modern education. This research investigates the challenges and the roles of peer assessment in supporting eportfolio based-learning in the class of Assessment in ELT. The subjects of this qualitative research are six students of the class in the academic year 2023/2024. Data are collected through an in-dept interview with the students and analyzed with following steps namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The study reveals several challenges: (1) student reluctance due to unfamiliarity with peer assessment and time constraints, (2) bias influenced by personal relationships and competition, (3) different perspectives on the fairness and the value of peer assessment, and (4) difficulties in managing additional tools for eportfolio assessment and feedback. Despite these challenges, peer assessment plays a crucial role in: (1) enhancing motivation, (2) developing self-control, (3) improving metacognitive abilities, and (4) fostering engagement among peers.
