Abstract
The concept of retributive theory emphasises that punishment should be proportional to the violation and that wrongdoers deserve punishment based on their moral guilt. This punishment has an impact on a person's internal condition, through coping strategies; a person reacts to the problems he faces. This study aims to explore how the concept of retributive theory of justice sees the punishment dropped to the main character and analysing the behaviour of the main character towards the problem he faced in the film The Life of David Gale (2003).
The researcher used a qualitative method. Data collection was carried out to be sorted, understood, and analysed. It was used to answer the problem formulation through scenes, dialogue, and script of the film. As an output of American studies that applied interdisciplinary studies, the researcher used two theories, Retributive Theory of Justice (1797) by Immanuel Kant and The Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping (TTSC) (1948) by Lazarus & Folkman.
The findings of this study found that in the film The Life of David Gale (2003) the main character involved the concept of retributive theory including proportionality and moral desert, and respect for autonomy. This study also shows the condition of the main character in facing the problems that includes dealing with the stressor, primary appraisal, secondary appraisals, also the results of coping.
