ABSTRACT
This research examined a correlation between positive affect and negative affect, i.e. wether the characteristic of affect was bipolar or monopolar. Quantitative analytical test was done by application of SPSS 10.00 software.
The Subject of this research were 151 college students of the faculty of Psychology, Ahmad Dahlan University (43 male and 108 female).
The result of this research indicates that: (1) There is no correlation between positive affect and negative affect (r=0.030, p=711, p>0.05) ; (2) There is acorrelation between positive affect (now) and positive affect (manytimes) (r=0.550, p=0.00). The contribution of positive affect (now) to positive affect (manytimes) was 30,25 %, the other factor’s contribute was 69,75 %; (3) There is acorrelation between negative affect (now) and negative affect (many times) (r=0.518, p=0.00). The contribution of negative affect (now) to negative affect (many times) is 26,83 %, the other factor’s contribute is 73,17 %. It can be concluded that the characteristic of affect is bipolar and is not monopolar.
