Abstract

The Curriculum 2013 is started to be implemented in Indonesia although not in all schools and all levels. The obvious difference of this curriculum from the previous one is that of the competence. The previous curriculum mentioned different standard of competence for each subject. In curriculum 2013, the competence (called core competence) that should be reached is the same for all level and all subjects. There are four core competencies; one of them relates to character.
Character building becomes the government and educators’ concern. The explicit existence of it in our curriculum is great and lofty. The problem is how to assess character in English teaching. Is it difficult? Why is there a note that it is not necessary to develop indicator of character competence achievement. This paper will discuss the importance of assessing character competence and how to do it.
