Abstract
SMP Negeri 1 Bantul is the oldest junior high school in Bantul district. The existence of religious diversity adopted by students of SMP Negeri 1 Bantul makes it very necessary to strengthen character education through school culture.
Therefore, researchers are interested in conducting research here because they want to know how the strengthening of religious tolerance character education based on school culture is carried out by SMP Negeri 1 Bantul. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. The subjects of this research are the Principal, Deputy Principal for Student Affairs, Pancasila and Citizenship Education Teachers, Islamic Religious Education Teachers, Christian Religious Education Teachers, Catholic Religious Education Teachers and several students from different religions. The objects of this research include routine,
spontaneous, conditioning, exemplary activities whose indicators are as follows: strengthening attitudes of respect for each individual's religion through school culture, strengthening attitudes to encourage open-mindedness towards other religions through school culture, strengthening attitudes to avoid satire against other religions through school culture, strengthening the attitude of togetherness
by involving the incorporation of students with different religions through school culture, and strengthening the attitude of instilling pluralism knowledge related to
religion and culture through school culture. Data collection techniques were carried out using interview and documentation methods. The data obtained in this
study were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that: 1) Strengthening the attitude of respecting religion for each individual in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul is carried out by making religious tolerance as a branding school, PPDB,, and programs on Friday which include Friday prayers. and daughterhood for students who are Muslim. While students who are non-Muslims in this case include Christians and Catholics, they are directed by non-Muslim teachers to go to worship in church. 2) Strengthening attitudes to encourage open-mindedness in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul is
carried out by praying together before starting lessons, inculcating the values of Diversity by the Principal to all school members through ceremonies and providing
religious tolerance materials in classroom learning activities. 3) Strengthening the attitude of avoiding satire against other religions in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul is done by building good communication between teachers and students, an enhanced emotional approach between teachers and students, and assimilation of PPDB.. 4) Strengthening the attitude of togetherness by involving the merging of students with different religions in SMP Negeri 1 is carried out by merging students of different religions at the time of PPDB, grade promotion, OSIS, and not burdening students in carry out extracurricular activities. 5) Strengthening knowledge of pluralism related to religion and culture in SMP Negeri 1 Bantul is done by not making schools have special religious symbols as their characteristics, making diversity as the main basis, merging religion and culture through dance activities, and customizing holiday celebrations religion.
