Abstract

Currently, the translation process for captions in Indonesia is increasingly developing, which is the impact of the development of the English language. The researcher analyzed the translation technique of captions at the Sonobudoyo Museum in Yogyakarta. The study's objectives are to find out the technique used to translate the captions at the Sonobudoyo Museum, the most common translation technique, and the least frequently translation technique.
This study is a qualitative descriptive study. The researcher collects the data using a digital camera and mobilizes himself to the Sonobudoyo Museum. The data was taken at the Sonobudoyo Museum, from 12 September 2022 to 12 October 2022. This study applied the theory of Molina and Albir (2002) to the analysis of the captions at the Sonobudoyo Museum. This study used a content analysis technique to analyze the data.
The result of this research is that Literal Translation was used 174 times, Pure Borrowing was used 37 times, Amplification was used 25 times, Reduction was used 17 times, Established Equivalent was used 8 times, Description was used 7 times, Modulation was used 4 times, and Compensation was 3 used times. Overall, there are 275 pieces of data collected from the Sonobudoyo Museum. The research highlights the diverse range of translation strategies employed in various contexts. While the Literal Translation was the common approach and the Compensation was the least frequent translation technique that the translator employed, other techniques were also utilized to ensure effective communication, cultural adaptation, and adherence to space constraints.
