Abstract
The aspiration to enhance one's physical appearance, particularly among women, has led to a heightened recognition of the significance of skin care, including skin color. A potential approach to enhancing skin brightness involves the suppression of melanin synthesis through the application of whitening agents. The process of melanin production can be hindered by the inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme activity. Ferulic acid, a constituent of corn oil, is hypothesized to possess the capacity to impede the activity of the tyrosinase enzyme. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of ferulic acid, a naturally occurring compound, in facilitating whitening through an in vitro examination of tyrosinase enzyme activity. The research process was conducted through the extraction of corn kernels using hexane and methanol solvents, followed by the isolation of corn oil using radial chromatography to obtain ferulic acid compounds. The structural elucidation of ferulic acid compounds was performed using FTIR, N-MR, and LC-MS/MS analysis. The isolated compounds were subsequently evaluated for their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase enzyme in vitro. The results demonstrated that ferulic acid exhibited a value of 22 parts per million (ppm), while the control, kojic acid, exhibited a value of 0.33 ppm. In consideration of the aforementioned results, ferulic acid can be designated as a robust inhibitor of the tyrosinase enzyme. This finding suggests the potential for ferulic acid to function as a natural whitening agent.
