Abstract

Background : Green tea extract contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) that has so in the formulation od green tea extract cream was added an enhancer to skin is poor so in the formulation of green tea extract cream was added an enhancer to increase the penetration of EGCG into the skin layer. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of volatile oil of curcuma xanthorrhiza rhizome to increase the penetration of EGCG to increase the capability as anti-inflammatory agent based on the number of cells that show the expression of COX2.
Methods : The study used creams of green tea extract (0.2%)which containing volatile oil of curcuma xanthorrhiza rhizome (F1=2.5%, FII=5% and FIII=7.5%) and control groups (healthy control, sick control and base control. Except for thr healty control group, all the different groups of mice were treated with croton oil for 3 days to induce inflammation prior to the study. The ability of the enhancer agent to enhance skin penetration was assessed by the number of cells that show the exepression of COX2 at the back skin of mice. The obtain data were analyzed by one way ANOVA, distribution test, and Mann Withney test with 95% confidance level.
Result : The results showed decreasing the number of cells that show the expression of COX2 with increasing concentration of volatile oil of Curcuma xanthorrhiza. While extract creams containing concentration of volatile oil of Curcuma Xanthorrhiza. While there was no significant difference between the groups treated with the green tea extract creams containing volatile oil of Curcuma xanthorrhiza. While there was no significant diffrence between the groups treasted with the green tea extract creams containing volatile oil 5% and 7.5%. These findings showed the ability of volatile oil of curcuma xanthorrhiza as a skin penetration enchancer. its contains terpene compound in its composition that could break the hydrogen bonding in the intercellular lamellar lipid bilayer of thr stratum cornrum.
Conclusions: Concentration of volatile oil of curcuma xanthorrhiza at 5% can be used as an enhancer in the green tea extract cream to improve the ability of EGCG to penetrate into the skin layer.
