Abstract

This research is entitled The Feminist Analysis of American Teenager as Reflected in Lady Bird (2017) Movie. The women's movement is not new. Since the early 1800s, women have been organizing as women to address several issues that reflect systemic disparities of class, status, and power. Most Americans seem to associate the women's movement with organized feminism, which is defined as initiatives to confront and alter gender relations that place women behind men. In addition to fighting gender inequality, women are mobilized as a specific constituency to support and oppose several other changes in the political and economic status quo using organizational and discursive resources. The purposes of this research are to analysis the type of feminist values of main character on Lady bird Movie and analyze the psychological motivation of lady bird in responding the social response about her feminism.

The research method applied in this research was a descriptive qualitative, while the method of collecting data used in this research were investigating the whole Lady Bird movie on, the researcher employed the scene and dialogue in the movie. The scene and dialogue in the movie Lady Bird are taken from the official website www.netflix.com. In analyzing the data, the researcher began by collecting the data needed, finding related studies and related theories, collecting data necessary for the study, applying the related studies and related theories, and the last the researcher drew the conclusion from the answered problem formulations. The theories used in this research were Liberal Feminism theory which were used to analyze the type of feminist values of main character on Lady bird Movie. Then Motivation theory of McClelland was used to analyze the psychological motivation of lady bird in responding the social response about her feminism.

The result of this study is briefly explained as follows. In Individual Rights and Equality, her pursuit of higher education aligns with the principles of liberal feminism, emphasizing equality and opportunity for women in accessing educational and career pathways comparable to those available to men. In Equal Opportunity and Access, Lady Bird embodies a resilient character in the film, consistently maintaining self-belief and self-encouragement. In Global Perspective, the determination that the lady bird shows in her discourse, considering relocation to explore where indigenous cultural representations are located, reflects the firm and assertive attitude of the lady bird which symbolizes the Global Perspective. While the psychological motivation of lady bird in responding the social response about her feminism. In the Need of Achievement, it can be proved when Lady Bird shows the fear of losing her scholarship because of the picture she made, the fear of losing scholarship means she wants to achieve. In Need of Affiliation, the theme of affiliation in "Lady Bird," encompassing the longing for social bonds and inclusion, significantly influences the protagonist's journey and relationships throughout the narrative. Lady Bird's pursuit of acceptance, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging serves as a central thread, shaping her interactions and experiences with others. In Need of Power, it can be proved in Lady Bird's family, power dynamics subtly shape interactions, particularly between Lady Bird and her mother, Marion. Marion assumes authority as the family's matriarch, wielding control over Lady Bird's decisions and behavior. Lady Bird, in response, seeks to assert her independence and challenge her mother's influence, revealing an underlying struggle for power within the familial structure.
