Abstract

Childhood is supposed to be a time filled with happiness and interesting experiences. However, in reality, many people experience trauma during childhood due to unpleasant experiences and require support from certain individuals. This study aims to present the impacts of Charlie's childhood trauma on his social interactions and the support that he needs to deal with his trauma as depicted through the movie “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012).
The method is qualitative by using the main data in the form of scenes, dialogues, and body language obtained from the movie. The data collection method is by understanding the movie and sorted the data which contains the objective of the studies. This research used two main theories namely PTSD theory by Freud (1917) and Social Support by Sheldon Cohen (1970) to analyze the main data and strengthened by using additional data from scientific journals.
Through the process of this research, it can be concluded that victims of PTSD due to childhood trauma may experience several psychological symptoms such as social isolation, difficulty forming connections, anxiety, and flashbacks. Support from family, friends, and possibly teachers can be very helpful in dealing with the trauma experienced.
