Abstract
The phenomenon of teenage delinquency still frequently occurs in society, ranging from verbal to physical delinquency. Such conditions are also intriguingly examined in literary works, especially novels. This research aims to describe the forms and causes of teenage delinquency in Susan Eloise Hinton's novel The Outsiders.
This qualitative study uses descriptive analysis methods with reading, observing, and noting techniques. Data are presented, analyzed, and discussed based on the content of the text structure in the novel. This research utilizes a psychological approach, specifically focusing on the social learning theory by Albert Bandura.
The research findings identify forms of teenage delinquency toward characters in the novel, such as bullying, running away, alcohol abuse, smoking, gang fights, using profanity, joining naughty clubs, gun related violence and suicide. The occurrence of such violence is due to three factors influencing the characters in the novel to engage in teenage delinquency. The factors of teenage delinquency by the characters in the novel include behavioral factors, individual factors, and environmental factors. Behavior factors include model imitation, positive reinforcement and punishment, and understanding behavioral consequences. Individual factors include self-efficacy, empathy and friendship levels, and difficult life experiences. Environmental factors include social stereotypes, peer influence, social structure, and inequality. These three factors of teenage delinquency are real phenomena in society portrayed through literary works.
