Abstract
The English article system is an important part of English grammar. It is one of the most difficult areas to master, even for students at the university level. They are still confused when they have to distinguish the use of definite and indefinite articles. The definite article consists of ‘the’ and the indefinite article consists of ‘a’ and ‘an’. This research aimed to know the types of errors and the dominant type of error in using articles in writing descriptive text.
This research was designed in the form of descriptive qualitative. The participants of this research were the fourth-semester students of the English Education Department Universitas Ahmad Dahlan in the academic year 2022/2023. A writing task was used to collect the data. The data was analyzed by determining the errors in the use of articles in students’ writing, classifying errors, calculating the percentage of errors, and drawing a conclusion.
The findings showed that there were three types of errors appearing in students’ writing; omission, addition, and misformation. The most dominant type of error was omission, especially in the use of the definite article ‘the’. Also, these research findings give additional information that there is a difference between English and Indonesian grammatical structure that can influence students in the process of learning English.
