Abstract
Poverty feminization is a complex phenomenon influenced by a variety of social, economic, and political circumstances. Diana Pearce's thesis outlines numerous crucial elements that contribute to the disproportionate presence of women among the disadvantaged, including gender inequities, caregiving obligations, and social policy. These critical elements can make life tough for women, particularly single mothers. The goal of this study is to examine the feminization of poverty experience in Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive. This undergraduate thesis investigates the phenomena of the feminization of poverty, as represented in Stephanie Land's book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive. Drawing on Diana Pearce's foundational theory, the research investigates the overlapping elements that contribute to women's disproportionate presence among the disadvantaged. The study uses qualitative analysis to show how societal disparities, gender-based segregation of labor, and social safety nets all play along to prolong the cycle of poverty among women, particularly single mothers. This thesis provides insights into the personal factors, social factors and the responses to feminization of poverty in Stephanie Land's story through the lens of Diana Pearce's theory, stressing the factors including unpaid care work, single motherhood, gender wage gap, occupational segregation, discrimination and stereotypes, inadequate social safety nets and the responses which are seeking employment, utilizing available social safety nets, and seeking legal and social protection. This thesis aims to unveil all of the factors of feminization of poverty experienced by the character Stephanie in Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive.
