Abstract
This study is entitled Learning Reading Strategies of the 3rd Semester Students of English Education Program of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan: A Case Study. This study is intended to find out the students' strategies in extensive reading, the dominant strategies in extensive reading, and the effect of extensive reading on the students‟ reading skill of the 3rd semester of English Education Program of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan.
This study belongs to qualitative research. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. The subject of the research is 33 of the third semester students of English Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. Five out of 33 students were interviewed. In analyzing the data, the researcher recorded and transcribed five English Education students. The interview was conducted at Ahmad Dahlan University. The researcher showed the data that had been transcribed to the students to confirm that the transcript was correct and matched what they said. Then, the data were analyzed and presented in a descriptive analysis and finally the researcher concluded the results of the research findings.
The findings of this research show that there were four strategies in extensive reading employed by the students, namely memory strategy (19.23%), compensation strategy (19.23%), meta cognitive strategy (42.31%), and social strategy (19.23%).
The dominant strategies in extensive reading is metacognitive strategy because in this research students can use their skills in reading and need practice. The students affect in extensive reading is influenced students' reading interest to become more enthusiastic about reading, because in extensive reading students are required to have the ability to understand the content of the text quickly.
